Web of Science Databases

Web of Science® consists of five databases containing information gathered from thousands of scholarly journals in the following areas of research.

Science Citation Index Expanded®

Science Citation Index Expanded is a multidisciplinary index to the journal literature of the sciences. It fully indexes over 6,650 major journals across 150 scientific disciplines—that's 2,100 more journals than the print and CD-ROM versions of the SCI. The Science Citation Index Expanded includes all cited references captured from indexed articles.

In addition, the Science Citation Index Expanded:

  • Provides access to current information and retrospective data from 1900 to the present. Note that you may not have access to all data years.

  • Averages 19,000 new records per week.

  • Includes approximately 423,000 new cited references per week.

  • As of January 1991, contains searchable, full-length, English-language author abstracts for approximately 70% of the articles in the index.

Some of the disciplines covered include:

Agriculture Neuroscience

Social Sciences Citation Index®

The Social Sciences Citation Index is a multidisciplinary index to the journal literature of the social sciences. It fully indexes over 1,950 journals across 50 social sciences disciplines, and it indexes individually selected, relevant items from over 3,300 of the world's leading scientific and technical journals.

In addition, the Social Sciences Citation Index:

  • Provides access to current information and retrospective data from 1956 forward. Note that you may not have access to all data years.

  • Averages 2,900 new records per week.

  • Includes approximately 60,000 new cited references per week.

  • As of January 1992, contains searchable, full-length, English-language author abstracts for approximately 60% of the articles in the index.

Arts & Humanities Citation Index®

Arts & Humanities Citation Citation Index is a multidisciplinary index covering the journal literature of the arts and humanities. It fully covers 1,160 of the world's leading arts and humanities journals, and it indexes individually selected, relevant items from over 6,800 major science and social science journals.

In addition, the Arts & Humanities Citation Index:

  • Provides access to current information and retrospective data from 1975 forward. Note that you may not have access to all data years.

  • Averages 2,300 new records per week.

Current Chemical Reactions®

Current Chemical Reactions contains single- and multi-step new synthetic methods taken from leading journals and patents from 39 issuing authorities. The overall reaction flow is provided for each method, along with a detailed and accurate graphical representation of each reaction step. Current Chemical Reactions (1985 - present) contains more than 880,000 reactions. It is updated with 3,000 reactions each month.

Note The Current Chemical Reactions database contains an additional 140,000 reactions from the prestigious Institut National de la Propriété Industrielle (INPI), dating back to the 1800's.

Index Chemicus®

Index Chemicus contains the structures and critical supporting data for novel organic compounds reported in leading international journals. In addition, many records in the database show the reaction flow from starting material to final product. Index Chemicus is a vital source of new information on biologically active compounds and natural products. The database (1993 - present) contains over 2.6 million compounds. It is updated with 3,500 compounds each week.

About Citation Indexes

A citation index contains the references cited by the authors of the articles covered by the index. You can use these references to do a cited reference search. This type of search enables you to find articles that cite a previously published work.

In addition to cited reference searching, you can search these databases by topic, author, publication name, and address.

About Chemistry Databases

The two chemistry databases contain graphic representations of the structures and reactions reported in the journal articles they cover. You can search these databases by structure, by compound/reaction details, and by bibliographic information (topic, author, publication name, and address).
